Welcome Wilson Sr. was 30 when he and a group of future prominent Houstonians acquired the land that would eventually become Jamaica Beach on the west side of Galveston Island.

The property was seen as being so far from civilization that Galveston plumbers, electricians and roofers refused to do work there, Wilson said last week as the development marked its 50th anniversary.

“It’s a great, great day for Jamaica Beach today,” said Mayor Vic Pierson in his opening remarks at a news conference to announce establishment of a museum to display photographs and artifacts of the founding of the West Galveston Island city 50 years ago; and the first ten years of its history.

‘It was a very desolate spot right here on the West End of the Island,” said Welcome Wilson, Sr., one of a group of five University of Houston graduates who developed Jamaica Beach. Wilson now chairs the UH Board of Regents.

Glazier Foods Co. has sold its 286,000-square-foot headquarters and distribution facility to GSL Welcome Group and will lease back the property. Situated on 33 acres at 11303 Antoine Drive near the North Sam Houston Parkway, the property was purchased by GSL Fund 21 GF Sub E.

GSL will expand the facility by 160,000 square feet in the freezer/dry storage areas. GE Capital provided financing for the acquisition and funding for the $14 million expansion. Construction is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Glazier Foods Co. has sold its 286,000-square-foot, Northwest Houston headquarters and distribution facility to GSL Welcome Group LLC.

Glazier, a Houston-based food service distributor, will continue to lease the 33-acre facility from GSL and will be responsible for improvement and maintenance of the facility.

GSL Welcome has completed a build-to-suit development of a 67,000- square-foot office/industrial facility at 4242 W. Greens Road for Tadano America Corp.’s U.S. headquarters. The Japanese firm has leased the facility for the sale of new construction mobile cranes in North America. The project marks the first build-to-suit development to be completed in GSL Welcome’s 33-acre West Greens Business Park near Antoine and Sam Houston Parkway.
